The Sisters of St Paul de Chartres marked a momentous occasion on Saturday, October 19th, celebrating two significant milestones: their 40th anniversary of service in Australia and the centenary of their chapel at St Paul International College in Moss Vale, New South Wales.
Founded in 1696 amid the wheat fields of Levesville, France, the Congregation's history spans 328 years. Like the wheat that surrounded their origins, the Sisters' mission has flourished through spiritual growth and transformation. "These fields remind us that for our mission to flourish, we must 'fall into the ground and experience death' like grains of wheat," reflects Sr. Teresa Lau, District Superior.
The Australian chapter began in 1984 when the Sisters arrived from Hong Kong, bringing their founding spirit to this new land. Over the past four decades, they have touched countless lives through education at St Paul International College, pastoral ministries, and elderly care, embodying the vision of their founder, Fr. Louis Chauvet.
The mission has evolved organically over the years. While some Sisters have returned to the Father's home or returned to Hong Kong, new members from Vietnam and Australia have joined, creating a dynamic blend of youth and experience.
Today, their presence extends beyond St Paul International College in Moss Vale to include an aged care facility in Boronia Heights, Brisbane, as well as vital parish work and pastoral care. At the heart of their Moss Vale campus, the centennial chapel stands as a testament to their enduring spiritual presence, having served as a sanctuary of prayer and hope for both the Sisters and the community for 100 years.
"As we reflect on these milestones," shares Mother Maria Goretti Lee, Superior General, "we give thanks for the past and look with hope to the future. Our mission continues with the same spirit of love, faith, and dedication that has guided us for over three centuries." She asks for prayers that the Sisters may grow in their love for Jesus and, like their patron St Paul, continue to proclaim, "Woe to me if I do not proclaim the Gospel" (1 Cor 9:16).
