Mentone Community – December 1999 to September 2017
At the invitation of Rev. John Walshe, parish priest of St. Patrick and the Holy Angels Mentone, and the support and approval of the Most Rev. George Pell, Archbishop of Melbourne, Sr. Pauline WONG, the Provincial Superior of Hong Kong sent Sr. Mary Joseph SZE, Sr. Agnes Xavier and Sr. Clotilde Au-Yeung to start a new mission in the State of Victoria. It was the desire of the Parish Priest that the Sisters’ presence would be a “witness of God’s love and care for His people”.
Soon, the Sisters began to engage actively with various pastoral activities of the parish: visiting and giving Holy Communion to the elderly and the housebound; conducting Sunday School and teaching catechism to children attending non-Catholic schools; giving spiritual directions to the Legions of Mary, Mothers’ Prayers Groups, Friends of St. Paul and organizing Eucharistic Adorations for young men and women discerning their priestly or religious vocations. The Sisters were also involved in the Youth Groups of the Catholic Chinese Community and the Vietnamese Communities. From time to time, they gave them talks in retreats, youth camps and leadership camps.
From 2004 – 2008, 4 temporary Professed Vietnamese Sisters were being prepared for their Perpetual Vows by Sr. Miriam Estelle Da LUZ. In 2006, we saw the first group of Vietnamese missionary Sisters making their Perpetual Profession in Australia at Mentone parish – an event deeply moving and unforgettable to all and which our parishioners have not been participating and witnessing for over 30 years!
In September 2017, the Sisters moved out from Mentone residence and joined with the Chelsea community to form into one community. Two Sisters continue to engage themselves actively in the pastoral ministries and serving the parishioners at the Catholic Parish of Mentone-Parkdale East, and at St. Joseph’s Parish at Springvale.

On 14 December, three Sisters arrived Chelsea in their newly built convent at 78 Argyle Avenue.
On 24 December, Fr. Pritchard, parish priest of St. Joseph’s, Chelsea and Fr. J. Walshe, parish priest of The Catholic Parish of Mentone-Parkdale East concelebrated Holy Mass and blessed the new convent.
Fr. Pritchard soon brought the Sisters around to meet the various ministry groups in the parish and introduced them to the parish school community. The Sisters began to make themselves useful in the parish, giving a helping hand wherever and whenever they can. They also conducted Retreats for the parishioners.
On 20 September 2017, the community at Mentone moved out from the “Bishop’s House” and amalgamated with the community of Sisters at Chelsea to form into one community. Today, the Sisters continued to render their apostolic ministries to the 3 parishes – Mentone, Chelsea, and Springvale which they have come to know and love.
